Lindsey Marlor of Pillow Thought wasn’t happy with her small upstairs bathroom, but she was unsure how to transform it into a cozier space. A fresh coat of paint and a few new details made all the difference.

1. Add a Ladder

Choosing a bright paint color for the vanity also makes the white surfaces look clean and fresh. An icy blue brings out the rich colors of the patterned wallpaper without making the bathroom feel too busy.

2. Avoid Shelf Brackets

Shelf brackets make for stylish accents in a large bathroom, but they can feel cluttered or awkward in a tiny space. Avoid them by installing a single floating shelf that extends to the width of the vanity, like in this design by Unique Kitchens and Baths.

If you can’t ditch the brackets, try a slim ladder to hold towels or robes instead. This trick by Collected Interiors adds character to the room and frees up wall space for other fixtures.

Another way to elongate your bathroom is by drawing the eye upward with wainscoting or paneling. Trendy shades like soft gray, icy blue, seafoam green, or warm white can visually enlarge a tiny bath without feeling stark. Keeping the walls and trim light also makes it easier to add personality with colorful accessories and patterned rugs, should you tire of your current color scheme down the road.

3. Add a Backlit Mirror

Backlit mirrors aren’t just a convenience: They also help make small bathrooms feel bigger and more welcoming. The lighted element trickes the eye into thinking there’s more room, while a soft glow makes taking a long bubble bath or getting ready for the day feel all the more luxurious.

Designer Katie Davis bucked this bathroom’s original floorplan to let sunlight flood the space, which made it look much larger. She also added a new window treatment, custom cabinetry doors with reeded glass, and chrome accessories to complement the carefree nature-inspired decor theme.

To get the most out of your backlit mirror, install it flush against the wall for a sleek look, or elongate the surface with a narrow strip of molding that matches the ceiling. You can buy a pre-lit mirror, or you can run strips of LED lights behind a regular mirror for a similar effect on a budget. Just be sure to follow safety guidelines to avoid electrical fires or accidents.

4. Upgrade Your Lighting

This is another small bathroom design trick that can make a big impact. By choosing a light color and placing large mirrors in the room, you can visually expand the space and make it feel bigger.

Boldly patterned tiles were the starting point for this quick, budget-friendly powder room remodel by Gemma Bonham-Carter of The Sweetest Digs. She paired them with a modern vanity and inexpensive, thrift store-found storage, adding touches like a framed needle art piece for texture and an industrial vase filled with pink roses to tie the look together.

Leverage the vertical space in a powder room by adding a shelf above the toilet, as seen in this design from Avery Cox of Block Renovation. She also chose a black accent wall to add depth and contrast. Lastly, she replaced the existing medicine cabinet with one in a recessed location to further save space. Adding little details throughout the room can also help to make it feel cohesive and more spacious, such as veining on the sink top or the brass finish of the hooks.
